Keeping your beneficiary(ies) up to date ensures your benefits will be handled according to your wishes should you die.
If you do not have a spouse, you may name anyone to receive the death benefit if you pass away.
If you are in a spousal relationship, that person is your primary beneficiary unless there is a signed Spouse's Waiver on file. Your spouse would be designated as your primary beneficiary and you may choose to name a contingent beneficiary(ies) to receive the benefit if your spouse predeceases you.

To add/remove a spouse at retirement, you will be required to send in additional documentation such as a marriage/divorce/death certificate or Spousal Waiver of Pre-Retirement Suvivor Benefit.
Beneficiary changes completed online are immediate.
Mailed beneficiary change requests processing time can vary. To avoid delays be sure to include all of the required documents.
There are no fees to update your beneficiary(ies).
