Details on how to let MEPP know if you have a change in spousal relationship status.
See the MEPP glossary for definition of spouse.
Whether you are adding a spouse or removing a spouse you need to let the Plan know. Spouse's are entitled to a 60-per-cent survivor benefit from a pension.
Once your spousal relationship is legally dissolved or your spouse has waived the right to death benefits, and you notify MEPP, you can name anyone as your beneficiary. You can update your beneficiary(ies) online, or by completing the Designation of Beneficiary form.
Your spouse remains your beneficiary until the spousal relationship is legally dissolved and you name a different beneficiary. Both things must happen. If you dissolve a spousal relationship, but forget to change your beneficiary designation, that person is entitled to benefits.
If you go through a separation prior to retirement, and the divorce is not finalized before you retire, your spouse may be required to sign additional waiver forms.
